Grace

For the last month, I've been thinking about what I want to say about grace.

Walking the beach this morning, I realized, I want my tombstone to include this quote by Steven Garber: “But when the day is done, every truly good life is always, first and last, a story of grace.”

I think about the grace that's been shown me through the years by friends as I've learned and grown, and how they've given me time and space to expand my worldview and understanding of different issues.

I think about the grace of each day, the morning mercies that point me to the Father and His plans, which are so much better than mine.

This song came up on my playlist today. We should testify of grace because He has given us one more day.

I was reminded of how most conversations with those I love in Haiti go.

“Did you have a good day?”

“Wi, gras a Dye.” (Yes, by God’s grace)

”Did you have a good night?”
”Wi. Gras a Dye.”

By God’s grace.

“Gras a Dye.” That phrase flows freely from the lips of so many I hold dear. I want it to be a natural part of my conversations, as well.

I’m thankful for grace that’s been extended to me through the years, and I hope I can continue to learn how to show grace others. I want to live by Paul’s words:

I’m speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me, and especially as I have responsibilities in relation to you. Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.
— Romans 12:3
